Living with and beyond cancer event

Greenhill Hotel, Wigton

23 February 2013

NHS Cumbria and Macmillan Cancer Support are jointly hosting an event for anyone who has been affected by cancer. The event will give support for patients, their families and health professionals who care for cancer patients.

The Cancer Survivorship Event, “Living with and Beyond Cancer” is due to take place at the Greenhill Hotel, Wigton on Saturday, February 23rd 2013.

The one-day event aims to provide those who have been affected by cancer the chance to meet others with similar experiences. It will be an opportunity to hear practical tips for improving lifestyle and living well beyond cancer. Patients and professionals will gain by hearing each others perspectives and from hearing more about national initiatives to support cancer survivors.

Local Cumbrian speakers will be joined by national cancer specialists for the event which will cover topics such as: the benefits of physical activity, late effects of cancer treatment, complementary therapies, healthy eating and financial advice.

Dr Cherryl Antoine-Timothy Macmillan GP Cancer Lead for Allerdale said: "More and more people survive their cancer, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have long term side effects; they may have emotional and physical problems such as depression or fatigue. This event aims to raise everyone’s awareness and find some practical solutions.

"Over recent years we have seen great improvements in Cancer survival rates, thanks to medical advancements, however this is only half the battle. It is also about improving patients’ experience of care and the quality of life for cancer survivors. This one day event is an opportunity for patients, their family, friends, carers and professionals to work together to achieve this in Cumbria. I feel we learn so much from patients and carers."

Anyone wishing to attend can book their free place for the event at the Greenhill Hotel on February 23 from 9.30am-4.30pm by calling Susan Collins, Cancer Service Officer for NHS Cumbria on 01900 324235 or email:
