Stonewall invites gay, bisexual & trans men

to have their say

Biggest ever survey of

men's health opens

Stonewall has launched what will be the biggest ever survey of gay and bisexual men's health at:

www.stonewall.org.uk/healthsurvey

The survey will cover a range of issues including mental health, diet and general fitness, long-term health conditions and illnesses like heart disease and cancer, and experiences of using health services.

Ben Summerskill, Stonewall Chief Executive, said: ‘We know quite a lot about the sexual health of gay and bisexual men, but very, very little is known about their wider health needs. This is an opportunity for gay men to have their say, contributing to the biggest ever health survey of its kind.'

The research follows Stonewall's ground-breaking study into the health needs of lesbian and bisexual women, Prescription for Change, which surveyed over 6,000 women: -

What's the Stonewall Men's Health Survey all about?

This is a survey conducted by Sigma Research for Stonewall on the health needs of gay men, bisexual men and other men who have sex with men. The survey will ask you a range of questions to do with your health including:

  • Diet, general fitness and exercise
  • Smoking, alcohol and drug use
  • Mental health
  • Cancer screening
  • Long-term health conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes
  • Domestic violence
  • Experience of discrimination
  • Experience of using NHS services

Please take part if you are a man who:

  • thinks of himself as gay or bisexual and/or
  • is attracted to other men and/or
  • has sex with men
  • Trans people who meet these criteria are welcome to complete the survey

Why Is Stonewall Doing A Mens Health Survey?

In 2007, researchers for Stonewall conducted a similar survey of lesbians' health needs. Prior to this survey, it was widely assumed that lesbians had no specific health needs. However, this groundbreaking survey uncovered a shocking range of previously unidentified issues.

By repeating the scale of this survey with gay and bisexual men, we can determine if there are any similar gaps in knowledge regarding their specific health needs.

The findings of this research will equip healthcare providers, policymakers, campaigners and gay and bisexual men themselves to ensure their health needs are being equally taken care of.

We guarantee your anonymity. We will not collect any information that would allow anybody to identify you.

The full confidentiality policy is available at:

Most men will take 15-20 minutes to complete the survey. If you would like further information before taking part you are welcome to contact David Reid who is a research fellow with Sigma Research.
