AWAZ Cumbria, the voice of Black and Minority Ethnic people in Cumbria, is launching its anti-discrimination campaign on 21 March 2011, to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Distinctive cards and posters will be distributed throughout the county proclaiming ‘Racism has no Place in Cumbria’.
In 1996, the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed March 21 to be the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (Resolution: 2142), and called upon world leaders to increase efforts to eliminate all forms of racial intolerance and discrimination. The day was chosen to remember the deaths of nearly seventy people, killed by police during a peaceful demonstration against apartheid, in Sharpeville, South Africa in 1960, and has been used as a rallying cry by anti-racist organizations worldwide.
Says Peter Foley, AWAZ Cumbria’s Chair, "So often there are seemingly small, but undoubtedly hurtful, comments made to people because they speak with a foreign accent or have different skin colour. Make no mistake, this is racism and should be reported. It is AWAZ’s view that racism is unacceptable, whatever form it takes.”
